FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS WELLNESS COACHING?As a wellness coach I focus on health and wellness from a holistic perspective, so this could involve focusing on exercise and nutrition but could also include goals centered around stress management, work and career goals, healthy relationships, time management and more. My coaching practice is client-centered, which means that you set the direction and I serve as a guide. I use a strength-based approach, drawing from your past successes and personal values to help you move forward. Through open-ended conversation and motivational interviewing, I ask thoughtful questions that support you in creating a clear vision of your healthiest self. From there we break that vision down into achievable steps so you can stay focused and create lasting change.WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN A SESSION?We begin by developing your wellness vision. Using guided exercises, we'll evaluate areas of your life where you are looking for change. We work together to set goals to align with your vision and values. Once your vision is clear, we create a plan with specific, achievable three-month goals and then we break this down further into weekly goals building toward the three month goals. Together we will explore obstacles that might get in the way and strategies for overcoming those obstacles. I will also ask questions aimed at drawing from your positive experiences, strengths and support systems to enable you to create a plan to move forward and stay consistent in your goals.WHY MIGHT SOMEONE WANT TO WORK WITH A WELLNESS COACH?Many people seek out wellness coaching when they are ready to make a change but feel uncertain about where to start. Coaching offers a supportive space to explore your goals, overcome obstacles, and stay accountable. It can help with improving habits, developing new routines, creating better balance and consistency in your life, and making progress with goals related to both mind and body health.HOW IS WELLNESS COACHING DIFFERENT FROM THERAPY OR MEDICAL CARE?Wellness coaching is not a replacement for medical care or therapy. Medical professionals diagnose and treat medical conditions of both the body and mind, and therapists support personal growth, helping clients understand their emotions, patterns and past experiences. As a wellness coach I will encourage you to draw from past experiences and explore them to help with motivation but the focus is on the present and the future. My job is to ask questions to clarify where you want to go with your health and wellness and help you figure out ways to move forward using your strengths, values and resources. The discussions and explorations lead to a concrete action plan and there is a judgement-free but important accountability piece where I will be checking in with you between sessions to see how things are progressing, to tweak goals if necessary, and to help you work through any obstacles or challenges that might be impeding your progress.WHAT KIND OF GOALS DO CLIENTS TYPICALLY WORK ON?Clients set a wide range of goals depending on what matters most to them. Some of my clients have focused on goals related to fitness, exercise and nutrition while others have focused on goals related to healthy environment, healthy finances, healthy use of time, stress management, self-care, mind health, work-life balance or healthy relationships. All goals are client-directed and personalized.DO YOU GIVE ADVICE OR TELL CLIENTS WHAT TO DO?Coaching is a collaborative process. I don't prescribe one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead I ask questions to enable you to clarify your goals and values. You are the expert on your life. My role is to support you in creating a plan that feels right for you.
